The Grand Canyon: South Rim

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you probably remember seeing and hearing about my day trip to the Grand Canyon last month– I’m so happy to finally be posting about it! I have lived in Arizona now for a little over four years and truly love the state. It has so much natural majestic beauty. I’m more of a city gal (though I love camping and hiking…the works) so I wasn’t sure I was going to love it as much as everyone else did. “So, what do I do once I’m there? Stare at it?” The answer is, yes. You stare. And gawk. And take lots of cool pictures, because it’s wow. Amazing.

Tips for Visiting the Grand Canyon South Rim

  • Bring lots of water– it’s the desert, people!
  • If you plan on hiking, wear proper shoes.
  • Arrive early before the crowds settle in
  • Pack a lunch– there’s a walk-way that goes along the edge of the canyon, and you won’t want to turn back for food near the entrance if you’re having a good time!
  • Bring a camera
  • If you can help it, visit in the fall when crowds are starting to die down and the heat isn’t as bad.

Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? Is it on your bucket list?

  • Katie @ The Style Dunce

Beautiful! I want to visit the Grand Canyon so bad! The red rocks in Arizona and Utah are so gorgeous I think. I’ve been to Moab and Lake Powell in Utah and it’s one of my favorite places in the US, so I think I would absolutely love the Grand Canyon.

    • Kayli Schattner

I hope you get to go someday, Katie! We could go together! I absolutely love the red rock- if you go to the Grand Canyon- or anywhere in Arizona- make a point to go to Sedona as well! The most majestic red rock I have ever seen. :)

After I graduated High School I traveled to the West of the US with my parents and one of our stops was Grand Canyon. It was such a great experience – things like this just don’t exist in Europe! We did hike in the Canyon and – woah – it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Maybe I’m fitter now, but I remember just about feeling dead when I was back on top again: The heat is just crazy! I could go on forever about the heat in Arizona and being shocked after stepping of the airplane… ;) I think what makes hiking in Grand Canyon more exhausting than at other places is the fact that you go down first – so you still have ascension left when you’re already exhausted!

I’m glad you enjoyed visiting Grand Canyon – you’re pictures look beautiful and make me crave to go back again! :)

    • Kayli Schattner

I totally agree about how hiking at the Grand Canyon could wear you out because of the quick decline! G and I are planning on doing the Havasupai Falls hike next spring and I’d imagine that it’s going to be a real butt kicker! Thanks for all of your lovely compliments, Melanie! x

  • Britta

These pictures are awesome! I have never been but it is definitely on my list. I can imagine how many people would benefit from your tip of packing food haha sometimes on hikes I kick myself for forgetting that!

    • Kayli Schattner

Thanks, Britta! Yes, I would have definitely benefitted from that tip! I didn’t think much of it and then suddenly…we both got rather hungry…and it was a long way to the next pavilion!!haha.

  • Christina McCall

Great tips! Its been … geez, 16 years since I’ve been there and I did the same thing you did — stare, gawk in awe, and take lots of photos!

Wow, yes! It is so majestic. Truly a sight to see!

  • Christine

Wow, Kayli, I can’t even tell you how much I dream of going there… Been on the top of my bucket list for the past 15 years or so ;) Looks like you had a wonderful trip!! Thanks for sharing :)
